Translation
Microfinance in the MENA region faces a particular challenge because most resources on microfinance are not available in Arabic. This has limited the accessibility of critical information for some practitioners and has inhibited the dissemination of best practice microfinance knowledge. Even the most fundamental publications on microfinance and other important manuals are not available in the language in which practitioners in the region operate.

In order to address the unmet need for Arabic translations of leading micro-finance manuals and other training materials, Grameen-Jameel has commissioned the translation into Arabic of key microfinance reference books, videos, and newsletters that provide pertinent and up-to-date information on the field of microfinance.

The following are some of the publications which the Initiative has recently translated and published:
  • Pathways out of Poverty
  • Grameen Reader
  • Social Entrepreneurs are the Solution (speech by Dr. Muhammed Yunus)
  • Tapping the Financial Markets for Microfinance
  • Microcredit Summit Campaign E-Newsletters
  • Microcredit Summit Campaign Training Video; Building Better Lives

One of the more ambitious projects within the Initiative’s translation activities has been the development of the Arabic Microfinance Gateway in collaboration with SANABEL, the regional microfinance network, and CGAP, the pre-eminent donor agency focused on micro-finance that originated within and is housed at the World Bank.
In an effort to address the lack of any Arabic language sources on micro-finance related information on the Internet, the Grameen-Jameel has entered into a strategic relationship with SANABEL, the premier network of micro-finance institutions in the Arab world, CGAP, the pre-eminent donor agency focused on microfinance that originated within and is still housed at the World Bank and the Rockdale Foundation.  The Initiative, SANABEL and CGAP have agreed to work to develop the Arabic Microfinance Gateway which will be a website that will be a “one stop shop” for information on microfinance in the Arab World.  Some documents recently translated through the Initiative that are on the Gateway include:
  • Islamic Financing Models for Small Projects.
  • Diagnostic Report on the Legal and Regulatory Environment for Microfinance in Tunisia.
  • Diagnostic Report on the Legal and Regulatory Environment for Microfinance in Morocco.
  • Interest Rate Ceilings and Microfinance: The Story So Far.
  • Financial Institutions with a Double Bottom Line: Implications for the Future of Microfinance.
  • Economic and Social Impact of Solidarity Group Lending.
